TAOISM: The Science and Philosophy of Flow

The science and philosophy of flow are rooted in Taoism. The ability to focus the mind so intensely that we feel a sense of effortlessness is the core of the Taoist wisdom of wu-wei. Wu-wei is a feeling of intelligent spontaneity, where the mind is embodied and the body is mindful. The best example of effortless action is found in art and sport, where we discover the art of being in the zone that many world-class performers experience. But in Taoism, the art of being in the zone requires us to take that effortlessness out of our skill and into daily life. Flow is our natural state of mind.
